Spetses, a car-free island located 54 nautical miles from Athens, has a unique architecture, naval history, and culture. The island was a significant naval power during the early 18th century, dominating major shipping routes of the Mediterranean. Captains’ mansions lining the coast reflect the vast wealth and grandeur of that time, including the mansion of Greek War of Independence heroine Laskarina Bouboulina, which now houses a museum.
The island is perfect for a short break or a long vacation throughout the year, with crystal clear waters and cosmopolitan nightlife. In September, visitors can witness the impressive re-enactment of a naval battle called “Armata,” while sports lovers can participate in the Spetsathlon in April or the Spetses Mini Marathon in October.
